Accessibility for the Future   |   May 2, 2009

PACER CenterMINNEAPOLIS, May 2, 2009 – At PACER Center’s 27th Annual Benefit, The M Group with PACER, and its Simon Technology Center, announce it’s effort to create accessible interactive applications for multi-touch devices and computers that are touch enabled, including Microsoft Surface computing. The M Group will showcase a multi-touch application on Microsoft Surface at the Annual Benefit Saturday, May 2nd, held at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

The launch of Microsoft Surface marks the beginning of a new technology category and a user-interface revolution. Surface provides effortless interaction with digital content through natural hand gestures, touch and physical objects. Surface computing breaks down traditional barriers between people and technology, changing the way people interact with all kinds of everyday information.

“With touch computers becoming available to consumers, we want to help create accessible applications for children and adults with and without disabilities to interact together, both at home, in school and potentially the work-force,” said Paula Goldberg, executive director at PACER. “The collaborative nature of this technology can help improve educational outcomes and socialization skills for children with disabilities to ultimately provide opportunities for employment and independence in this rapidly changing world.”

Currently PACER with The M Group, a Microsoft Surface partner, is in the discovery phase of the Accessibility for the Future project with research beginning next month to uncover user needs and collaboration scenarios for various children and adults with various disabilities. The results of the effort will provide simple access to information and collaborative experiences for both adults and children with visible and invisible disabilities.

“Over the last 5 years our team has worked with the PACER Center, and become passionate about the organization’s mission and community reach.” said a representative from The M Group. “As we created experiences on Surface over this last year, our team couldn’t help but think of all the possibilities for educational and creative expression applications we could develop on behalf of PACER. Our involvement with the PACER Center and work on Surface made a natural fit to engage in this effort.”
